Dermal fillers: Everything you need to know!

August 30, 2016

Dermal fillers are a popular anti-ageing and enhancing treatment that produce results immediately.

As we age, loss of facial volume caused by a reduced production in collagen, reduced facial fat and bone density can have an ageing effect on the face. Thanks to the latest technology, cosmetic doctors can now fix this issue without surgery. With the latest dermal filler formulations and injecting techniques, doctors and nurses can add volume back to the face and plump out lines with long-lasting results.

Dermal fillers are a soft tissue filler injected directly into the dermis (the deeper layer of skin) creating volume in the area and restoring a smoother appearance.

Dermal fillers have many uses, they can be injected into the face to correct wrinkle lines, creases, folds, scars and loss of volume. They are not only used for anti-ageing purposes, they are popularly used to enhance certain facial features such as lips, reconstructing noses and chins, jawline sculpting and non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Dermal fillers have no muscle-relaxing properties and most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. The treatment is painless when an anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area, or an anaesthetic injection (similar to what your dentist uses) to block any feeling in the area being treated.

Results generally last around 4 to 12 months, depending on the brand of filler, the technique and the area that is being injected. The more treatments you have, the longer the results will last.

Popular treatments and amounts needed:

Lines from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial fold): 1-2mls on each side

Lines from the mouth to the chin (melomental fold): 1-2mls on each side

Lines above the upper lip: 0.5-1mls

Frown lines: 1-2mls

In the lips for volume and definition: 2-4mls

To restore volume to cheekbones or cheeks: 2-4mls

In the bridge and tip of the nose: 2-4mls

Temple’s: 1-2mls on each side

(note treatment amounts are only intended as a guide)

Everyone is different. Therefore, to achieve the best results, we use varying amounts of product and different kinds of filler to achieve the best results after an individual facial assessment. When effects begin to soften, a ‘top up’ will be needed, however it may need less volume than the first time.

Bad injectable experiences happen all the time at clinics with low levels of training, qualifications and experience. To ensure you find a qualified and experienced injector, ensure you ask these questions before booking:

  1. Who will do the treatment? Check that the person has the qualifications and experience to be injecting.
  2. What will the result look like? Ask for before and after photos from the injector. Be clear about your expectations of the results.
  3. Ask what area the injector specialises in. Certain treatments, such as nose or chin augmentations, jawline sculpting and non-surgical rhinoplasty should be done by a specialist.
