The Evolution Of Anti Ageing InjectionsJune 25, 2015
The use of anti ageing injections including wrinkle injections and dermal fillers have evolved significantly over the last decade. Not only are there are more options to to choose from, but the way these treatments are now being used is now different as well. In this article, we will explain how these anti-ageing treatments have evolved over the past 10 years.
Then: Anti-wrinkle injections were used to eradicate all muscle movement, resulting in a frozen look.
Now: Anti-wrinkle injections are still used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, the way the treatment is injected has now changed. “We have evolved the way we use anti-wrinkle injections over the last decade,” says Justine Stewart-Crompton, our principal clinical consultant Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia. “When anti-wrinkle injections were first used, we saw an overdose on the amount of toxins needed to treat wrinkles and fine lines, which resulted in an undesirable ‘frozen look’. Today, we use a smaller amount in order to achieve a more natural look.”
Anti-wrinkle injections are also used to reshape the face, to give it a more oval-shape. Wrinkle injections can also be used to help teeth grinding and certain kinds of migraines.
Then: Dermal fillers were only used to fill in lines.
Now: Dermal fillers are now used to address facial volume loss as it is a sign of ageing. “We now have a better understanding of volume today,” says Dr Garry Cussell, the principal doctor for Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia. “Before dermal fillers, we only had invasive surgery to fix the signs of facial ageing. Today, all you need is to inject fillers to the areas that have lost volume, and make your face fuller within minutes without any down time. Lost fat is easily replaced.”
“As our knowledge of skin anatomy and our understanding of facial ageing has improved, dermal fillers are now used in other areas of the face,” says Justine. “Our use of dermal fillers have become more sophisticated, as we have created different types of dermal fillers to be treated in different areas of the face.”
Then: Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers were not used in conjunction with one another.
Now: We now take a more holistic approach using a customised treatment plan which can include fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, laser treatments, skin rejuvenation, peels, medical-grade skincare and skin tightening procedures such as our new skin tightening treatment using Ultrasound technology. Using a well-devised plan for anti-ageing treatments, maximum rejuvenation can be achieved. “Most experienced practitioners will do a mixture of fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, as well as other skin rejuvenation treatments, depending on what the person wants to achieve at the end of the day,” says Neda.
Then: Anti-wrinkle injections were only used to treat certain expression lines such as frown lines and forehead lines.
Now: The use of anti-wrinkle injections have now become much more sophisticated. “Other muscles of the face are used to correct small problems that are concerning patients,”explains Justine.
Whilst the tools and techniques may have changed over the years, some of the best advice regarding these treatments has remained consistent. These include:
- Make sure you do your homework: While patients are more educated in the different types of anti-ageing treatments available and what their uses are, choosing a qualified and experienced doctor or nurse will give you the best results.
- Whenever you are injecting the skin, there is still a chance slight bruising will occur: While injection techniques have improved overall in the last decade. “When you’re sticking a cannula into the skin, the chances of bruising can still occur – no manner how fine it is,” says Justine. Fortunately, the bruising is mild and will subside within 24 hours.
- Results of dermal fillers are instant, while anti-wrinkle injections can take up to a week for maximum results: “Patients can see an instant result with these treatments. You also don’t need to take time off to recover,” says Dr Cussell. “This is why they’ve remained popular over this last decade.”
