Which Skin Tightening Treatments Work Best?January 25, 2021
As we get older, our battle with gravity takes a downturn, and we may notice loose skin hanging around the eyes or the mouth and jawline, particularly when looking down at your laptop camera during video calls. Skin Tightening Treatments are so revolutionary because they can help lift and tighten the skin without doing anything invasive, hence why they’re sometimes dubbed the “non-surgical facelift.”
You can do skin tightening with ultrasound (aka HIFU), radiofrequency, laser and skin needling on the face, neck and body. Which skin tightening option works best?
It depends on a few factors. Most options target your collagen, the fibres that keep your skin elastic and tight in your youth. Collagen starts to break down and decrease as we get older, and our skin produces less new collagen each year after age 25.
The goal of skin tightening treatments is to stimulate youthful collagen production to rejuvenate your skin’s youthful strength and elasticity.
Skin Tightening With Ultrasound
Skin Tightening with Ultrasound is one of the most powerful options for non-invasive skin tightening. It uses technologies such as Ultraformer and Ultherapy which can focus ultrasound energy at very precise depths in various layers of the skin, from superficial to deep.
In fact, Ultrasound Skin Tightening can target the deepest layers of the skin which support and lift the more superficial layers for a better result.
With Ultraformer and Ultherapy, you get an initial contraction of collagen, and then results continue to form over the next few months.
Skin Tightening With Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency technologies like Thermage have a lot of the same benefits of Ultrasound Skin Tightening, including the stronger results and longer-lasting results (new collagen generation lasts 3-6 months). We get similar results between Thermage, Ultraformer and Ultherapy.
The downside to radiofrequency is that our clients often report that it’s a more uncomfortable treatment. Because radiofrequency cannot reach as deeply as ultrasound, you need to use stronger settings to get the same result, which may make it less comfortable.
Skin Tightening With Laser
Skin tightening with laser, such as Fotona4D and SkinTight, can be a comfortable treatment, but it does not reach as deeply as ultrasound energy, so you normally need a course of treatments to get a similar result. The benefit is that it’s the most comfortable of the above treatments and it tends to be more affordable. It may just take a bit longer to achieve results.
Skin Tightening With MicroNeedling and RF Needling
MicroNeedling and RF Needling use very tiny needle tips to create a micro wound healing response in your skin that releases growth factors and remodels your collagen.
MicroNeedling can improve texture, reduce fine lines and even stimulate some superficial collagen, but it probably won’t give your skin much tightening and lift. This is because MicroNeedling is a very superficial treatment using a microneedle-tipped pen that doesn’t go very deep into the skin.
Radiofrequency Needling (RF Needling) is a different story. Rather than moving a MicroNeedling pen across your skin, RF Needling uses a stamping technique which enables it to safely reach deeper layers of your skin.
RF Needling also combines the skin needling treatment with some radiofrequency energy, so you get the deep-reaching, collagen stimulating benefits of both treatments in one for more tightening and lift.
Skin Tightening vs Anti-Wrinkle Injections vs Dermal Fillers
Skin Tightening, anti-wrinkle injections and fillers all work differently for different aspects of skin rejuvenation.
Waning collagen can have three effects on our skin; sagging skin, wrinkles and creases, and loss of volume (especially in the cheeks and undereye where we also lose the fat pads).
Sometimes, volume loss contributes to more sagging.
The treatment you choose should address the concern that you have. So, Skin Tightening treatments can help with sagging skin such as jowls or depressed eyebrows.
Anti-wrinkle Injections relax the muscles that make your skin crease and fold with certain expressions to prevent wrinkles and lines from forming (they can soften existing wrinkles as well).
Dermal fillers can replace volume that can be lost as our collagen and fat pads wane with age. Sometimes, replacing fat pads with fillers can help lift the skin that has started sagging with volume loss, but it depends on the nature of your skin.
We all get older, but we all age differently, so a free consultation with a Doctor, Nurse or Clinician can help you determine the treatment plan that would work best for you!
